"Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy which concerns itself with the nature of being and the world. A metaphysician attempts to clarify the fundamental notions by which people understand the world, including what it means to "exist" and the definition of concepts such as object, property, space, time, causality, and possibility." -Wikipedia "Metaphysics"
In layman's terms, metaphysics is the philosophical study of existance and it's limits.
Within metaphysics, there are specific objects which hold particular qualities. Gemstones and fossils are an example of these specific objects and are appropriately called "particulars." Particulars are said to have special, natural attributes (e.g. size, shape, color, location). These qualities come from the particular's natural state of being within the universe. Organisms near to these particulars can be affected to their attributes; therefore, stones can have helpful psycological, mental, and physical influence over the human body.
